 gen. idem, in the sense ‘pit, hollow, hole’ is derived by Cox (1991, 492; 1992, 138; 2001, 264) from ON dǫkk f. ‘water-filled hollow’ (NO; cf. Nn. dokk ‘hollow’ (Torp 1992) and Ice. dökk ‘pit, pool’ (Cleasby 1874)); so also McDonald (2009, 351). SG doca has taken on the senses of (or, more accurately, coincides with a more recent borrowing of) Scots/Eng. dock (marine, criminal etc.), cf. Robertson and MacDonald (2010: ‘dock; hollow, hole’), and AFB˄ (/dɔxgə/ ‘dock, dockyard’).
