boc m. [b̥ɔʰk], gen. buic [b̥u̟ʰkʲ], [b̥uʰkʲ], ‘buck, male goat, roedeer etc.’ is derived by Cox (1991, 492) from ON bokk, accusative of bokkr m., a by-form of bukkr, and this is followed by McDonald (2009, 343). However, IE *bukko-s yields OG boc(c) regularly, hence Ir. and SG boc, cognate with Eng. buck, and there is no need to assume a loan from Old Norse, as MacBain (1911) implies.
Derivatives: SG bocan and buicean m. are formed with the diminutive suffix -an.
